GTSI-INL Hosts Prestigious Lecture By Dr. Thomas Albrecht Schmitt

The Glenn T. Seaborg Institute was honored to host Dr. Thomas Albrecht-Schmitt of Florida State University for a half-day symposium on Thursday, January 17, 2019.  Dr. Albrecht-Schmitt, the newest recipient of the Glenn T. Seaborg Award from the American Chemical Society, addressed a packed house, reviewing recent work by his research group at FSU.  His group is doing very elegant and ground-breaking work in the synthesis and characterization of heavy element compounds (Z>92).  Notably, his group has been working with compounds of californium and was instrumental in recent acquisition of a sample of californium for use at the INL’s Center for Radiation Chemistry Research . Following Dr. Albrecht-Schmitt’s presentation several researchers from the Fuel Cycle Science and Technology Department presented their research findings and a roundtable discussion followed.
